4 to 3 Credit Hour Course Conversion

A 3 credit hour course involves 135 total engagement hours (4 credit involves 180) which includes but is not limited to reading assignments, writing assignments, discussions, exams, and class meetings. Strategically reduce the overall workload without altering the course's core learning objectives. This often means fewer readings, discussion posts, and major assessments. Here are some strategies to help:

  • Identify and focus on the most essential topics that align with the course's learning outcomes. Eliminate or reduce the depth of topics that are less central to the course's outcomes.
  • Look for opportunities to consolidate related content. If certain topics can be combined or streamlined without compromising the course's learning outcomes, do so.
  • Scale back on the number and complexity of assignments to align with the reduced credit hour. Ensure that assignments are still rigorous but that they are fewer in number or shorter in length. Choose assignments that more effectively measure learning outcomes.
  • When possible, rather than cut assignments, give students a choice of which one they want to complete. Choice is linked to increases in student effort, task performance, and subsequent learning.
