Attendance, Rubrics, and the Grades Tool
print icon

The attendance tool is not connected to the gradebook or rubrics tool in My Courses. One way to "get around" this is to make grade items in the Grades Tool. Begin by clicking on the "Grades" tab in the blue navbar, then click on "manage grades" at the top left of the page.

Create a new category by clicking on the blue "New" button and selecting "Category"

Give it the name "Attendance" and then scroll down and select whether or not you'd like the points to be distributed evenly across all items. For this example each class attendance will be worth a total of 20 points.

After you click on the blue "Save and Close" button at the bottom of the screen, create a new grade item by clicking on the blue "New" button and selecting "Item"

If you have a rubric for attendance, scroll down and click on "Add Rubric." If you don't have one yet, you can create one by clicking on "Create Rubric in New Window"

Finally, click on "Save and Close."  To grade this attendance item, click on "Grades" in the blue navbar. Scroll over to the grade item and click on the caret next to it, then finally click on "Enter Grades"

From here, you can review the rubric by clicking on the rubric icon under the "assessment" category. NOTE: students cannot see the rubric in their grades. You will need to post the rubric in a "Course Essentials" module or otherwise deliver the rubric to them.

If the student did not receive 20/20 for their class attendance use the Feedback tool to let them know which part(s) of the rubric they failed to demonstrate.

Students will then be able to see this feedback in their grades tab.
